The International Academy for Art and Cultural Studies (IAA) is a distinguished non-profit, autonomous institution established in 2023. IThe International Academy for Arts and Cultural Studies (IAA) is an anonymous cultural and educational institution established to advance cultural diplomacy, artistic exchange, cultural preservation, education, well-being, and international understanding. Working as an implementing institution for the Cultural Diplomacy Initiative of the United Nations Entities and Agencies, IAA develops programs that connect artists, educators, scholars, young people, diplomatic missions, academic institutions, cultural organizations, and international partners.
Our Mission
IAA’s mission is to use culture, the arts, education, and scholarship as practical instruments of dialogue, trust-building, and cooperation beyond borders. Its work is aligned with the values of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in relation to quality education, good health and well-being, cultural sustainability, inclusive communities, peacebuilding, and international partnerships.
How We Do
We are committed to building a consultative relationship with the United Nations through ECOSOC and working closely with UNESCO and UN DESA to facilitate training and research, especially for individuals from developing countries. Our efforts are aligned with the functions and objectives of the United Nations, ensuring that our work contributes meaningfully to global peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
What We Archived
IAA’s work in music and performance is represented most prominently through the United Nations General Assembly Annual Gala Concert, for which IAA serves as a principal organizing institution. The Gala Concert is presented in celebration of the work and values of the United Nations General Assembly and has brought together Permanent Missions, United Nations officials, artists, orchestras, choirs, educational institutions, and invited guests in a setting where music functions as a platform for reflection, unity, and diplomatic exchange. Recent editions have involved the participation and support of countries including Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Hungary, Singapore, Monaco, Maldives, Rwanda, Qatar, Oman, Paraguay, and Portugal.
In 2025, IAA was appointed by H.E. Mr. Philémon Yang, President of the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly, to serve as the organizer of the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations Charter Day Concert, a commemorative cultural program marking the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Charter of the United Nations. Presented in connection with the broader UN80 commemorations, the concert placed artistic expression within a historic moment of reflection on the Charter’s enduring principles of peace, human rights, development, and international cooperation. The occasion received broad international attention, with related UN80 and Charter Day coverage appearing across major global media and broadcast platforms, including CNN, The New York Times, BBC, CCTV, and other international outlets.
IAA has also contributed to broader international music initiatives, including Carnegie Hall’s World Orchestra Week, a major youth orchestra festival bringing together more than 700 young musicians from around the world. In connection with this initiative, IAA co-initiated and hosted the opening gala program at United Nations Headquarters, linking the artistic energy of young orchestras with the diplomatic environment of the United Nations.
In youth music education and social development, IAA supports the mission of El Sistema and has entered a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with El Sistema in 2024 to strengthen cooperation in music education, youth leadership, access to the arts, and cultural diplomacy. Through this framework, IAA seeks to support young people not only as performers, but as emerging cultural citizens capable of contributing to their communities and to wider international dialogue.
I In the fields of visual arts, public art, and cultural preservation, IAA supports exhibitions, artistic presentations, academic exchange, and cross-cultural projects that connect contemporary creativity with heritage, identity, public life, and sustainable development. Its work includes engagement with artists, curators, scholars, and academic leaders connected to the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum, The Louvre - Abu Dhabi, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona, Lingnan University, Teachers College, Columbia University, and the Shanghai Public Art Cooperation Center. IAA’s initiatives in this field include United Nations-based art forums, cultural heritage exhibitions, public art research programs, and international visual arts presentations. Representative initiatives include the “Arts for Sustainable Development” forum at United Nations Headquarters, the “Lighting up Life with Intangible Cultural Heritage” exhibition program, and the “Global Ballet Forum.” Together, these programs present traditional craftsmanship, contemporary artistic expression, public art, and performing arts within a diplomatic and educational framework, affirming the role of culture as a bridge between heritage and innovation, communities and institutions, and local traditions and global dialogue.
In education, well-being, and interdisciplinary research, IAA works with academic partners to connect cultural diplomacy with learning, human development, and social impact. In collaboration with Teachers College, Columbia University and UNITAR-NYO, IAA co-founded the Consortium for Diplomacy and Global Action, a platform designed to bring together education, psychology, youth development, policy dialogue, arts education, and global engagement. The International Perspectives on Early Childhood Policy Symposium at United Nations Headquarters further reflects this direction, linking educational research and international policy discussion with broader questions of child development, well-being, equity, and opportunity. Through such initiatives, IAA supports interdisciplinary dialogue that places education and culture within a wider framework of human development, social inclusion, and international cooperation.
